Day 2 04.02.08

Scheduled Distance: 4 miles
Actual Distance: 4 miles
RPE: 6
Comments: I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill to avoid the stroller. This definitely has it's pros and cons. I really liked knowing my exact pace, but this is also a con because the canyon won't keep my pace for me, I need to! ;) I warmed up speed walking for 2 minutes and then went to 5 mph (12 min mile) as I had done yesterday.

I wasn't really feeling all that challenged so I upped the pace. I ran most of the 4 miles at 6 mph (10 min mile) but towards the end I still felt I had some juice so for the last mile I gradually got up to 8 mph. I finished in 40:39! The book keeps telling me not to worry about time, and not to push myself too hard in the beginning, but it feels SOOO good to accomplish something I haven't done for 8 years!

Because I was at the gym and Kate was doing well in the daycare, I decided to work my upper body on the machines. I used to be so impressed by my back and shoulder muscles that I would flex in the mirror in disbelief that that was MY body. I want to get that back again.

The third mile was toughest on the treadmill. I was already feeling tired and I was only half way. Before when I would run just for weight loss, I probably would have gotten off at that point. Something about having the training laid out for me kept me going and I have felt more motivated than ever. I know I am only on day two, and therefore still pretty fresh, but I can already tell that this is going to be a monumental event in my life.

I am so happy to see this! I set a goal for myself to run a marathon before I die. I actually started training a few months back but with no direction and very little will power, it didn't last. Are you a runner? I HATE running. I wonder if I were to read the book, would it help me? I am really proud of you. I think people (especially women/moms) set goals like this for themselves and never achieve them. Good for you. I will be checking this blog regularly and keep leaving comments. Let me know if it gets annoying! I just think that would help me if I were in your shoes! Hang in there and keep going. You are my hero!

Great job Lyd. Keep it up!

I ran across some old pictures of me and I thought, geese I used to be pretty darn cute (not such a ball of tub). That is going to be my motivation.....getting back to the cute girl stage.

Lydia,
I am so impressed! I don't think I could keep up with you at the 12 min. mile speed let alone 10 min. miles! Dang. I also enjoy running on treadmills with no kid distractions, but running on a asphalt road is a whole lot different...much harder on the joints. I can run twice as far on a treadmill. Have you noticed this as well? Or does it make much of a difference to you? Anyway, kudos! You'll do just fine!

Jealin- Love the comments. Keep 'em coming. Loved talking to you on the phone. Did you register for St. George? I think the book will make A LOT of difference in your attitude towards training.

Em- you are and will always be a cute girl! But I know what you mean about coming across old pictures. You'll notice my profile has a wedding picture....yikes!

Jenny-I think that physically, running is easier on the treadmill but it can be a little boring. Running on the road has the advantages of fresh air and changing scenery.

running on the treadmill is such a bore! i think it is a lot harder to do! unless, of course, there is a great show on and i get lost in it, then i don't realize that i'm running on the boring treadmill!

i ran a marathon in anchorage, alaska 15 months after our first daughter was born. i decided that after every child i would complete some major fitness event as motivation to lose the baby weight. it was after that marathon that i decided, again, that i am NOT a runner!

so, after our second was born i decided to do a triathlon. that was and still is my love for losing the baby weight! i've been doing triathlons ever since!

keep up the great running!

Mahina- Welcome and thank you for all your great comments. Did Kawika tell you it was your blog I stalked when I found the ticker? I love it and I really enjoyed your blog. ;)

I would love to do a tri someday, but the swimming really scares me. I have never had a formal swimming lesson and am a weak swimmer. I know that if I were to ever seriously consider a triathlon swim lessons would be a must!
